Whiteheads (closed comedons) are caused when the pores are clogged with oil. Unlike open comedons (blackheads), whiteheads are closed, so the oil is trapped under the skin.
How to get rid of whiteheads
Never attempt to remove whiteheads forcibly. This may result to skin damage because pores are not open and spread further infection. If whiteheads are not infected then exfoliation might be an effective whiteheads treatment. Wash affected areas of your face with facial exfoliators and gentle scrubs for 3-4 times a week.
If whiteheads are infected then you might try medications from the list
- Benzoyl peroxide - kills the acnes bacteria and helps prevent acnes from overgrowing.
- Tretinoin products - reverse the "stickiness" of the skin cells allowing them to slough normally.
- Salicylic acid (BHA, beta hydroxy acid) - reduces inflammation and helps your skin shed faster.
- Antibiotics (topical or oral) - kill the acnes bacteria and might be used if many whiteheads are infected or if there are infected papules or pustules.
